In 2008, the Muskegon Conservation District kicked off an exciting partnership
with Muskegon County’s largest employer, Alcoa Howmet, to transform an
expensive and high-maintenance traditional lawn at its Thermatech facility in
Whitehall into a beautiful, environmentally-friendly natural landscape.

Since then, the district and Alcoa Howmet have also begun several other
similar projects on the company’s Whitehall campus. Not only will Alcoa
Howmet save money and provide environmental benefits to the White Lake
area, it will serve as a positive model for “greening up” West Michigan!

Native landscaping at Alcoa Howmet, plus several other native landscape
projects in the White Lake area, are all part of the White Lake Community
Native Landscape Initiative, developed to increase the awareness of the
benefits of native landscaping and green infrastructure, promote the linkage of
White Lake area green infrastructure, and stimulate similar private and public
native landscaping projects in West Michigan.
